Winter festivities: Carnaval of Podence

The application of the “Winter festivities: Carnaval of Podence” was approved yesterday by the Cultural Intangible Heritage Committee of UNESCO during its 14 th session in Bogotá, Colombia.

The Carnival of Podence is a social practice integrated in the winter festivities in Trás-os-Montes and associated with the celebration of the end of winter and the arrival of spring.

This will be the eight registered Portuguese element in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity following: "Fado, urban popular song of Portugal" (2011), "Mediterranean diet" (2013), "Cante Alentejano, Polyphonic singing from Alentejo" (2014), "Manufacture of cowbells" (2015), "Falconry, a living human heritage" (2016), "Bisalhães black pottery manufacturing process" (2016), and "Craftmanship of Estremoz clay figures" (2017).
