The exhibition ‘Lords of the Ocean. Treasures of the Portuguese Empire of the 16th-18th Centuries’ will be held from December 8, 2017, to February 25, 2018, in the Exhibition halls of the Assumption Belfry and Patriarch’s Palace of the Moscow Kremlin Museums.
Regarded by the Russian President Vladimir Putin as an important cultural and historical event, the exhibition is dedicated to the richness of the Portuguese colonial empire. Divided into two different sections – ‘Formation of the Portuguese Navy Empire’ and ‘Meeting of the Civilizations: Conquest, Missionary work, Dialogue of Cultures’ – the exhibition introduces Portuguese and European works, as well as works made in different territories of Portuguese presence.
The exhibition counts with works from the following museums: National Museum of Ancient Art (Lisbon), National Archive of Torre do Tombo (Lisbon), National Palace of Sintra, Royal Armoury (Madrid), British Museum (London), Victoria and Albert Museum (London), State Hermitage Museum (Saint Petersburg), Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts (Moscow), among others.
